Mel and Jean Carnahan believed in the promise of democracy and the idea that a self-governing nation can succeed. But they also knew that successful self-governance requires commitment and effort. They believed deeply that we must all be willing to learn, stay informed and take an active interest in public policy and public service.  Furthermore, they knew we must all be faithfully committed to treating each other with respect and civility, even when we see things differently.  These principles were foundational, not just to their years in public office, but in the way they conducted their lives. To millions of Missourians, Mel and Jean exemplified what public service really means.
